Rest Area News Rack Distribution

Interstate rest area newsrack distribution proves effective

JACOBSEN DISTRIBUTION, SIX STATES
Distributing Publications in Newsracks

Non Daily publications and newspapers with no established reader clientel that use newsracks for distribution must find high traffic areas to have enough sales (or free targeted distribution) to be worthwhile.

There are only 4 general areas left that have enough foot traffic to be worthwhile for newspaper vending machine sales. 1. Airports, 2. Private malls, 3. Interstate Rest Stops 4. Post offices

Airports are not class A public forums but most court rulings uphold newsrack distribution. However, most airports impose restrictions that unless fought, diminish the distribution feasability. So each airport newsrack setup is a different matter.

Private malls are not generally open to newsrack newspaper distribution, thus the old sidewalk newsboy or newsrack up date is out of business since most street shopping foot traffic has moved to private malls.

Rest Area sidewalks

The motoring public have to go to the bathroom. Commercial and private travelers all enter these rest area facilities daily. Five thousand to twenty five thousand in these 24 hours a day rest areas, go in those doors at a typical rest stop and use the sidewalk that is
open to newsrack distribution. We have a US Court of Appeals ruling upholding the first amendment right to distribute on interstate rest area public sidewalks. We also have a federal court ruling that your newsracks can not be restricted to undesirable areas of the sidewalk at interstate rest stops.

US Post Office perimeter sidewalks are open to newsrack placement and sales. We obtained a US Court Of Appeals ruling affirming the right to sell on Post Office and GSA perimeter sidewalks about 25 years ago. This precedent setting case opened up post office sidewalks nationwide to newsrack distribution. Nearly everyone winds up going to the post office sooner or later, but now that is dropping off with Fed Ex, UPS
and email all eating into post office foot traffic. We have dropped several hundred post office locations as a result.

Interstate Rest Area and Airport Traffic are both growing constantly and in many rest stops the foot traffic from trucking people enter from one side and newsracks there can be targeted to truckers.

Trucking is a growing market and this is the one place every trucker frequents. The Auto side reaches affluent people that travel the interstates. There are no huge number of competitive publications distributed here because of the expense of distribution of miles between rest areas.

We travel the 8,000 mile route monthly and distribute publications in addition to our own at reasonable cost either in our newsracks or their own. We handle the distribution and the legal hassles of maintaining newsracks on effective locations on the public sidewalk at rest stops.

We currently distribute in rest areas in South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, and will be adding other states soon. We have discontinued all circulation in Kansas, Nebraska, and North Dakota.
